An Introduction to Modern Thesis Templates

All Microsoft Word documents are based on templates (Dotx). Templates serve as the master or pattern for the layout and formatting of your documents. Frequently, they operate in the background, and you may not even be aware you are using a template. For example, when you create a new blank document in Microsoft Word, it is based on the Normal template. The Normal template automatically formats your document page with 1.25 inch Right and Left margins and 1.25 inch Top and Bottom margins.

A template may also contain pre-determined text, formatting, custom toolbars, macros, or other elements. When you create a new document based on such a template, some of the document elements and formatting work are already available and you do not have to start your document from scratch.

What a template does and doesn’t?

Standard templates have pre-formatted facilities include the following tools:

  1. Heading Styles
  2. (Multi-level lists)
  3. Footnotes and endnotes
  4. Citation (endnote and Menedely)
  5. Cross-Ref
  6. Footer / header
  7. Lists of contents, figures and tables.
  8. Chapters combining

If the templates heading styles are used properly and consistently, the templates will automatically numbering and formatting the headings, tables, figures, equations, and literature citations of the text. For example, if the format of a single heading, in a template-based document, has been changed, the remaining headings could be updated automatically. Additionally, table of contents can be automatically generated on the fly allowing for more effectively preview of the document as it evolves.

How the Dotx templates are perceived?

The student who is struggling with the rudiments of writing a thesis may wish to make use of a thesis template, which will contain a basic thesis outline that the student may fill with his or her own material. generally, there are two types of students:

  1. Some students have never used dotx and need some training to understand and appreciate the dotx format. Students, generally, don’t distinguish between word documents (docx) and template documents (dotx).
  2. Other students who know how to use templates, but complain that usual templates don’t provide proper tools for inserting nonlinear contents like figures, tables and equation. Standard template does not give any solutions to assist the student inserting captions for nonlinear contents like figures, tables and equations. captions numbering and alignment are a serious challenge for every writer using MS Word. Same challenging procedure is required to change the layout of a page into landscape position, it is lengthy and cumbersome procedure.

 Thesis Template

Thesis templates can provide excellent help to the student through offering a body of formatting and style information upon which he or she can depend, thus saving a great deal of time in comparison to creating that information anew. As long as the student knows that the department has approved that type of thesis template, he or she can rest assured that as the writing progresses, it is meeting the department’s approval.

An Example of Modern Thesis Templates.

Modern thesis templates are facilitated with all the tools required  to write a thesis in a simple and efficient way. thesishub Template is an examlpe of the new trends in templates drafting. It provides the students with caption blocks to overcome the problem of inserting caption for nonlinear contents. Caption Blocks are innovative method, created by the author, for inserting any nonlinear content.

Caption Blocks method to Insert captions for nonlinear content (figures, Tables, Equations, etc..)

This method is useful in long documents particularly in theses and dissertations, because greater precision is needed to manage the placement of figures, tables and equations. A very important feature of this method is that it keeps the caption attached together with its corresponding figure, table and equation. Consequently, makes it easy to move the caption and the figure as one block if needed. Four caption blocks have been created and are ready to be integrated into MS Word building blocks:

 Table-caption block

Table-caption block, a block consists of two rows; the lower is for the table and the upper is for the numbered caption.

Figure-caption block

Figure-caption block, a block consists of two rows; the upper is for the figure and the lower is for the numbered caption.

Equation-caption block

Equation-caption block, a block consists of two columns; the left column is for the equation and the right is for the numbered caption.

General-Caption block

General caption block, with empty left side cell. Anything can be inserted in the left cell. This block is suitable for Mathtype and similar objects.

When the students use thesishub template, with the aid of caption blocks, they can immediately start focusing on writing their ideas. I Avdice every one to download and use this template. The template is open source and can be modified to fit your requirments. If you need any  help to understand and modify thesishub template contact me at this email: info@mythesishub.com

important notice :

The student should make sure that his thesis meets the department’s format and style requirements. For example, if the department requires endnotes, the student should check that the thesis template allows for endnotes rather than footnotes. The student should verify that those features work from the most recent edition of the required style manual.
